ISO 45001, the Occupational Health and Safety Management systems standard has replaced OHSAS 18001. Issued in March 2018 any organisations certified to OHSAS 18001 will need to transition to the ISO standard by March 2021.

The new standard is designed to increase identification of risk and opportunity for improvement within the host organisation and increase involvement in the management of Occupational Health & Safety at all levels.

The main changes to the standard are:

Section 4 – Context & Interested Parties, this comes into line with the 2015 versions of ISO 9001 & ISO 14001, the term “workers” is used to refer to employees or contractors working under the organisations direction

Section 5 – Enhanced requirements for consultation and participation with a specific requirement for worker involvement in the risk assessment process. Also more focus on Top Management being involved in the management system

Section 6 – Risk and opportunity, these need to be assessed and managed. Enhanced requirements for management of objectives as improvement drivers

Section 7 – Enhanced communication requirements

Section 8 – Enhanced controls over outsourced processes (contractors/subcontractors)

Section 9 – Enhanced evaluation of performance required
