Highfield ABC Accredited Short Courses
Learners will be provided with knowledge of essential workplace practices for basic health and safety.
Learners taking this qualification will develop a clear understanding of both employee and employer responsibilities of proper health and safety in the workplace. Learners will assimilate the benefits of health & safety, the steps involved in conducting a risk assessment, the most likely causes of workplace accidents and how to reduce them.
In addition, they will learn about ill health, near misses, hazards and their control, what to do in an emergency and why keeping good records of accidents, is of the utmost importance.
This qualification has a single unit of mandatory activity to complete and is suitable for all people, over the age of 14 and can be part of a workplace wide employee programme or as a stand alone individual course.
How Much Time Will It Take For a Learner To Obtain This Qualification?
Normally, successful completion of a single day course based in a classroom is all that is required to secure this qualification. Other approaches are also available if required including distance learning, e-learning and blended learning.
The Qualification Assessment Process
Successful completion of the course is measured by a multiple choice exam which lasts no more than 45 minutes. Candidates who answer a minimum of 12 questions correctly out of 20 will receive the award.
Further Qualifications
2 other learning pathways are available for those wishing to extend the qualification base including:
- Fire Safety – Level 2 Award (Qualifications and Credit Framework – QCF)
- Health and Safety – Level 3 Award

This Level 3 award course is aimed at learners who already hold supervisory positions in their workplace such as team leaders, supervisors or managers or employees who are about to become employed in these roles.
The course provides learners with knowledge covering good health and safety practices and their management in the workplace including:
- Benefits of health & safety management systems
- Fundamental requirements for welfare, health and safety
- Risk assessment principles
- Common hazards in the workplace, their risks &measure to control
- Managing the impact of accident s and incidents in the workplace
How the Qualification Is Achieved
Successful achievement involves 30 hours of course study time and a further 21 hours of guided learning.
Qualification Assessment Procedure
Learners take an examination comprising 60 multiple choice questions to be completed over a 2 hour period.

NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health
The NEBOSH certificate is recognised by Employers as the UK’s no 1 foundation health and safety qualification. Our pass rate is currently 95%
These courses are aimed at persons in organisations who have a responsibility for health and safety. The courses are carried out over either a 2 week period, consisting of 2 one week sessions in each consecutive month, followed by two revision days prior to the examination. Exams are set nationally four times a year; however we are able to offer local sittings at a small additional charge.
We can also offer this course through distance learning.
NEBOSH National General Certificate in Construction Safety and Health
The NEBOSH Construction certificate is a recognised qualification to demonstrate competency in compliance and includes the revised CDM regulations. Our pass rate is currently 100%
This course is aimed at persons in construction and building industries who have a day to day responsibility for site safety. The course id delivered over a 2 week period, consisting of 2 one week sessions in each consecutive month, followed by two revision days prior to the examination. Exams are set Nationally four time a year, however we are able to offer a local sittings at a small additional charge.
NEBOSH Process Industries Award
This is a new qualification aimed specifically at process manufacturing industries such as petrochemical, nuclear, brewing, and chemical related businesses.
The course is run over 43 hours and covers 4 units:
- PS1-Process safety
- PS2-Environmental management
- HSW1-Workplace safety foundation
- HSW2-Workplace based risk assessment
This is a One week specialised qualification aimed specifically at those persons who work either on or offshore in the Oil and Gas Industry.
The course is ideal for people in organisations who have to manage risk and resources, typically line managers. The aims of the course is to ensure safety requirements are appreciated, provide the skills to critically review their own departmental systems for safety, and identify opportunities to introduce new controls or implement changes as appropriate to make their department work more safely.
The course is made up of 7 core modules and 1 organisation- specific one, which is a work place assignment carried out in the students own time. The overall timetable for the tutorial sessions is approximately 1 week; (36hours).This course is externally verified and certified.
Participants will learn the basic principles of how fire spreads, the classes of fire, and the type of fire extinguishers, including practical demonstrations of fire extinguishers. The requirements of current fire safety legislation and practical guidance as to compliance and hence mitigation of fire risk in the work place.
This course can also be delivered to meet customer specific requirements such as:
- Evacuation chair
- Fire Marshal
- Fire extinguisher training
We are also able to offer recognised qualifications in fire safety via our awarding body Highfield.
This course provides an appreciation of the roles and responsibilities of all duty holders, the principles of regulations, and timings of appointments. Explanation and practical advice on selection of duty holders in terms of competency, and the requirements of the Health and safety plan. The course also covers the legislative requirements and duties of each holder for qualifying and non-qualifying projects. Management of Contractors
